The Ancient Romans were the first to discover the delights of Castrum Maiense and for the last 150 years or so Merano has been a world-famous climatic spa. Famous people such as Empress Sissi and Kafka have enjoyed the medicinal properties, beautiful scenery and the unbelievably mild climate. The valley lies 3,000 m below the fantastic surrounding mountain world and there is a regular cable car service, almost all year round, which brings you a little closer to joy and freedom.
